We got a set of lamps as a part of an estate sale package. I love the height... love the large shades... but the I'm just not feeling the bases. I'm wanting more of a casual rustic feel, but these seem more like beach condo wanna bees to me.
Since I'm not ready to permanently molest these lamps, I decided to try a temporary fix by wrapping the bases in burlap. Armed with my imagination, I gathered up a roll of pre-hemmed burlap strip, small hemp rope, a decorative beaded sprig and some prefab cardboard scrap-booking goodies. Note: the cardboard embellishments came with a sticky glue on the backs already.
I didn't take pictures of every little step, so let me show you the finished product with descriptions.
Lamp 1
I tied a loose knot near one end of the burlap strip. This is where the beaded embellishment will go. I started wrapping at the bottom, leaving the end out so it could be pulled onto the front of the lamp later. Tidy is not needed here. I wrapped and twisted the burlap from bottom to top, leaving out both ends. I tied the top in place with a length of hemp rope.
Because of the lamp's shape, I brought the hemp up to the base of the lamp post and tied it off there as well. This is to keep the burlap from slipping down.
I pulled the bottom knot of burlap into place, inserted the decorative sprig into the knot and secured the whole thing with a hidden sewing pin.
Then, I loosely tied a hemp rope around the top of the lamp shade and tied it off with a bow. whole thing took about 15 minutes per lamp.
Since the other photo's show glare.... here's a close up of the cardboard bees I added.
I couldn't resist adding these cute bees because... well? They're cute!
Lamp 2
A little birdie for this lamp.
The knot is facing the opposite of the first lamp.
